Ayush Mhatre, the talented 17-year-old opener from Mumbai, has been called up by Chennai Super Kings for trials during the ongoing IPL 2025 season. According to Times Of India report, CSK’s Managing Director and CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, confirmed the trial invitation, stating, “Yes, we’ve called him for trials. He has impressed our talent scouts.”

While Viswanathan clarified that no injuries have been reported within the CSK squad, he added that the trials were an opportunity for Mhatre to showcase his skills.

The promising youngster, who went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction has caught the eye of CSK’s talent scouts following his standout performances in domestic cricket. This isn't the first time CSK has shown interest in the Mumbai youngster, as they had previously invited him for trials last November, just before the IPL auction.

Mhatre, currently at the BCCI National Cricket Academy's zonal camp for Under-19 cricketers in Rajkot, has travelled to Chennai to participate in the trials at the Chepauk Stadium.

Ayush Mhatre's performance in domestic cricket

Mhatre has enjoyed a fantastic debut season with Mumbai in the 2024-25 domestic circuit, scoring 458 runs at an average of 65.42 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which included two centuries and a fifty. He also amassed 471 runs in eight matches at 33.64 in the Ranji Trophy, with a top score of 176 against Maharashtra.

Mhatre’s recent success, including impressive scores in both the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Ranji Trophy, has sparked speculation that he could be brought in as a last-minute replacement if any player faces injury or unavailability.
