Jasprit Bumrah has rejoined Mumbai Indians ahead of their IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 7 at Wankhede Stadium, but the star pacer is expected to miss out on the playing XI for this game. The Mumbai Indians on Sunday, April 6 released a video of Bumrah set to join the squad. The video featured his wife Sanjan Ganesan narrating a story to their son Angad.
She says “Let me tell you a story. In 2013, there was a cub who entered this jungle, a jungle full of runs. Sixers and boundaries. Where everyone was scared. He showed courage over the years. He fought many battles. He fought for survival. He fought for his pride. He won, he lost, but never gave up. These battles left him with scars. But these scars didn’t stop him. Once a cub, now a lion, and the lion is back. He is back to be the king of this jungle again," Sanjana said in the video.
History of Jasprit Bumrah's injury
Bumrah had been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru following back surgery. The pacer has had ongoing back issues, including swelling after his heavy workload during India’s tour of Australia.
This led to his absence from India’s limited-overs series against England and the Champions Trophy series in Dubai earlier this year. Bumrah also missed nearly 11 months of cricket, from September 2022 to August 2023, after undergoing surgery. He made his comeback during a T20 match against Ireland.
Jasprit Bumrah's Mumbai Indians journey
He has been a key figure in MI’s bowling attack ever since his IPL debut in 2013. He has featured in 133 matches and has taken 165 wickets. Bumrah is MI's second-highest wicket-taker in IPL history, with 165 wickets, trailing only Lasith Malinga.
The only season he missed was in 2023 due to a back injury. Ahead of the last IPL auction, Mumbai Indians retained Bumrah for ₹18 crore, showing their continued faith in the bowler.
Mumbai Indians have had a challenging start to the ongoing IPL season, winning only one of their four matches so far. With Bumrah unavailable, new faces like Satyanarayana Raju, Vignesh Puthur, and Ashwani Kumar have made their debuts, while Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar have led the attack, with Hardik Pandya providing additional seam-bowling options.
