Kagiso Rabada’s Heroics Lead MI Cape Town to Maiden SA20 Title

MI Cape Town fast bowler Kagiso Rabada delivered a stunning performance to guide his team to their first-ever SA20 championship at a packed Wanderers Stadium on Saturday night.

Rabada rose to the occasion, taking 4/25 to help bowl out Sunrisers Eastern Cape for just 105, securing a commanding 76-run victory. The lethal pace attack was backed by the spin duo of George Linde (2/20) and Rashid Khan (1/19), ensuring the Sunrisers never found their rhythm in the chase.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, MI Cape Town came out firing. Ryan Rickelton led the charge, smashing a blistering 33 off just 15 balls, including one four and four sixes. His explosive start helped MI Cape Town race to 51 runs within the first five overs.

Though Rickelton was dismissed shortly after by Craig Overton, he made history by surpassing Heinrich Klaasen as the all-time leading run-scorer in SA20, with 1,012 runs across the tournament’s three editions.

Reeza Hendricks (0) and Rassie van der Dussen (23) fell soon after, but MI Cape Town found stability through crucial middle-order contributions. Dewald Brevis (38 off 18 balls) and Connor Esterhuizen (39 off 26 balls) stitched together a 50-run partnership, pushing the team to a competitive 181/8.

Chasing 182, Sunrisers Eastern Cape needed a solid start but crumbled early. Openers David Bedingham and Jordan Hermann departed with just eight runs on the board, putting the team under immediate pressure.

Tom Abell (30 off 25 balls) and Tony de Zorzi (26 off 23 balls) tried to rebuild with a 57-run stand, but their dismissals in quick succession—claimed by Linde and Rashid—left Sunrisers reeling at 68/4. From there, MI Cape Town’s bowlers tightened their grip, ensuring the opposition never recovered.

With this dominant victory, MI Cape Town finally ended Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s reign and lifted their first SA20 trophy, marking a historic moment for the franchise.
