Diogo Jota's funeral took place in Portugal on July 5
Jota's sudden death aged 28 and his brother's demise at 26 has left the entire sporting fraternity in a state of shock. The two died due to a car accident in Spain on July 3 at 12:30 am as the car tyre burst, resulting in catching fire while seemingly trying to overtake another vehicle.
Liverpool's current manager Arne Slot and a host of his teammates had attended his funeral. Notably, he had been married to Rute Cardoso only ten days before the accident. Following the 28-year-old's demise, Liverpool decided to retire his jersey as they issued the below statement:
"By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal — and therefore never to be forgotten. Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore — with honour, distinction and affection — the number 20. As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20."
Liverpool players had also decided to observe a moment of silence before the FA Cup 2025 final against Crystal Palace.
