Asmita Dey is all set to earn a promotion to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) following her exploits at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. Dey became the first Indian to win a CWG gold medal in Judo scripting history. She delivered a strong and focused performance to win the women’s 48kg judo gold medal, defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach 2-1 in a tightly contested final.
Asmita was born in Tripura but currently represents Uttar Pradesh in national competitions after joining the Uttar Pradesh Police as a Sub-Inspector. After her win, she received a letter confirming her promotion.
"Mujhe bataya gaya hai ki mujhe DSP bana denge. Ek letter aaya tha, usme likha tha. Abhi main Sub-Inspector hoon. UP Police ne bahut support kiya mujhe. CWG jaane se pehle financial help bhi ki. I am really grateful. That support, security and financial aid - I can't forget it. UP Police helped me and my family in many ways," she told the Times of India.
Dey had looked impressive throughout the competition, progressing confidently through the earlier rounds before delivering her best performance in the final. Against an experienced Quach, the Indian maintained her composure under pressure and capitalised on crucial scoring opportunities to secure victory.
This victory allowed Asmita to join the list of India’s Commonwealth Games gold medalists, creating another unforgettable moment for the Indian team in Glasgow.
