Ex Team India coach Ravi Shastri has revealed that Manchester United is the most followed football team in India, claiming that it holds the status by a country mile. Shastri stated that Manchester United has gained so much popularity mostly due to their past record.
Although Manchester United's form has been poor in recent times, they are the most successful side in the Premier League history, winning 13 titles. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Marcus Rashford, Rio Ferdinand, David Beckham have played for the club.
Speaking on the Stick to Cricket Podcast, Shastri answered David Lloyd's question of which is the most popular football club in India by answering:
"Man U by a country mile. It's because of the history, their past record. Though there are a lot of teams now in the Spanish league who are popular like Real Madrid and Barcelona. In our cricket team, you've got some real fanatics."
"I think he should have played a lot more Test cricket" - Ravi Shastri on Washington Sundar
Amid the ongoing Test series against England, Shastri heaped praise on spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar, who performed exceedingly well at Lord's, taking four scalps in the second innings. The 62-year-old said during the latest episode of the ICC Review:
"I always loved Washington. When I saw him on day one, I said he's the man. And he can be a genuine all-rounder for many, many years for India. He again is just 25 years of age. I think he should have played a lot more Test cricket. Can be lethal in India on tracks where the ball is turning, as New Zealand found out when they played against India. He out-bowled some of the senior spinners. He bowled that well and he can bat."
