Australian Open 2025: Novak Djokovic Retires Due To Injury, Alexander Zverev Reaches Maiden Final; Video

This is only Novak Djokovic's second loss via retirement at the Australian Open, after conceding to Andy Roddick in the 2009 quarter-final.

Novak Djokovic has been knocked out of the Australian Open 2025 after the Serbian retired from the semi-final match against Alexander Zverev. Fans including Zverev were left stunned in Rod Laver Arena after Djokovic retired having lost the first set 7-6 (7-5).

This is the first time Zverev has reached the final of the Australian Open and only the third time he has reached a Grand Slam summit clash.Zverev will meet the winner of the Jannik Sinner and Ben Shelton match in Sunday's decider as he bids for his first Grand Slam title.

This is only Novak Djokovic's second loss via retirement at the Australian Open, after conceding to Andy Roddick in the 2009 quarter-final.

Earlier reports surface that Djokovic suffered from an injury during the match against Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday. The incident happened when the serb was 4-5 down in the opening set, he had left the court, taking a medical timeout and returned with a heavily strapped upper left thigh. He did bounce back in the match after losing the first set, with the painkillers kicking in as he beat the Spaniard 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

Spanish publication Marca had reported that the Serbian skipped his training on Thursday and spent his time in recovery, with his physiotherapist Miljan Amanovic.

Novak Djokovic's previous injury at Australian Open

This is not the first time that Djokovic had suffered injury in between Australian Open. During the 2023 edition, the 37-year-old had suffered an injury. He had claimed to have had a 3cm tear in his left hamstring and wore a heavy strapping in every match en route to his win against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final to claim his 10th Australian Open title.
