Australia opener David Warner's brilliant batting performance helped the the side defeat Bangladesh via DLS Method in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Group 1 clash at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Friday, June 21.
With a target of 141, Australia were already past the 100-run mark in the 12th over, with David Warner bringing his half-century in 34 balls. Warner played an unbeaten innings of 53 off 35 balls. The match was interrupted twice due to rain in Antigua.
Despite the match didn't complete due to heavy showers, the win went in favour of Australia as they were 28 runs ahead of a sub-par score in the run-chase as per the DLS method.
Chasing a 141-run target, openers Travis Head and David Warner gave Australia a great start to their innings, racing the team to 59/0 in six overs before the match was interrupted by rain. After the resumption of the defending champions' run-chase, Travis Head was dismissed by Rashid Hossain for 31 at 65/1.
Then, Warner was joined by Mitchell Marsh to carry on Australia's innings. However, Marsh had a short stay at the crease as he was dismissed for 1 at 66/1. After Australia's skipper dismissal, Glenn Maxwell joined David Warner at the crease. The pair's partnership was flourishing before the rain played the spoilsport again.
Australia were 100/2 in 11.2 overs when the match was interrupted by rain and the officials decided to call off the match by declaring the defending champions as the winner as per the DLS rule.
Mid-innings update
Australia bowling attack led by Pat Cummins circumscribed Bangladesh to 140/8 in a stipulated 20 overs in the first innings of the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Group 1 clash at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Friday, June 21.
After opting to bowl first by skipper Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc gave an early breakthrough for Australia by dismissing Tanzid Hasan for a duck. Thereafter, Bangladesh batters Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto revived their batting with a 58-run partnership until the former was bowled out by Adam Zampa for 16 in the 9th over.
Glenn Maxwell was brought into the attack in the 10th over and removed Rishad Hossain on the last ball of the over to reduce Bangladesh to 67/3 in 10 overs. In the 13th over, Adam struck his second wicket to end Najmul Hossain Shanto's stay at the crease, dismissing him for 41 off 36 balls at 84/4.
Bangladesh crawled past 100-run mark in the 15th over before Marcus Stoinis picked his first wicket of his opening spell by dismissing Shakib al Hassan for 8 at 103/5 in the 16th over. After Shakib's dismissal, Bangladesh's ship kept sailing until Pat Cummins picked three wickets of Mahmudullah (2), Mehidy Hasan (0) and Towhid Hridoy (40) on the trot in two different overs to complete his hat-trick.
After Hridoy's dismissal, Taskin Ahmed (13*) and Tanzim Sakib Hasan (7*) added seven more to Bangladesh's total and set 141-run target for Australia to chase.
Pat Cummins registered the figures of 3/29 with an economy rate of 7.20 in four overs, while Adam Zampa picked two wickets while conceding 24 runs in his quota of four overs. Apart from Cummins and Zampa, Glenn Maxwell (1/14), Mitchell Starc (1/21) and Marcus Stoinis (1/24) contributed by picking a wicket each.
