Legendary Bengali singer and Rabindra Sangeet exponent Sumitra Sen passed away in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The news of her demise was shared by her daughter, prominent Rabindra Sangeet singer Srabani Sen, on her Facebook handle. “Aaj Maa bhore chole gelen,” she wrote on social media in Bengali, which translates to, “Mother left us at dawn today”.
Sumita Sen was 89 at the time of her demise.
What happened to Sumitra Sen?
Sen had been struggling with age-related ailments for several months now. She had been keeping well since last month, and on December 29, she was rushed to the hospital as her condition deteriorated.
She was undergoing treatment for severe bronchopneumonia. However, she was discharged and brought home later, but her health worsened on January 2 and she breathed her last on January 3 at her residence.

In 2012, Sen was awarded the Sangeet Mahasamman award by the West Bengal government for her contribution to the Bengali music industry and for keeping the heritage of Rabindra Sangeet alive through her voice.
She has crooned some famous Rabindra Sangeets including 'Megh Bolechhe Jabo Jabo', 'Tomari Jharnatalar Nirjone', 'Sakhi Bhabona Kahare Bole', 'Achhe Dukho Achhe Mrityu' to name a few.
