In the 2024-25 edition of Swachh Survekshan, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) secured the eighth rank in the ‘Swachh Shahar’ category for cities with a population of more than 10 lakh.
According to the report, Pune has 90 per cent door-to-door collection of waste, 87 per cent segregation of waste at source, 100 per cent processing of generated waste, 95 per cent remediation of dumpsites, 100 per cent cleanliness of residential areas, 100 per cent cleanliness of market areas, 100 per cent cleanliness of water bodies, and 100 per cent cleanliness of public toilets.
Pune has also received a five-star rating in Garbage Free Cities (GFC) and a Water Plus rating in Open Defecation Free (ODF).
Meanwhile, Punekars are sceptical of the Swachh Survekshan rating. "Pune is the 8th cleanest city in the country as per the national Swachh Survekshan. For the past week, I am trying to locate the city they are talking about amidst all the garbage. We first need to recognise that we have a problem so that we can improve," an X (formerly Twitter) user wrote.
"Who is the joker who did the survey of this city? Pune is so filthy and becoming a national shame. Come to Nagras Road at Aundh and see how bad the cleanliness is. Sad state," commented another user.
A third user stated, "It’s a bogus ranking. Navi Mumbai is clean, undoubtedly. Compare Pune with Navi Mumbai. If Pune is the 8th cleanest, then one can imagine the cleanliness of other cities in India. Only Indore, Navi Mumbai, and Mysore can be called clean. Yes, Jamshedpur (no corporation) is also very clean."
"If Pune is the 8th cleanest, I’m worried about our standards for measuring cleanliness," a fourth user quipped.
