The water scarcity has become severe in the Marathwada region, and Beed district is facing the most acute water shortage. The villagers in far and remote places have to wander miles for just a pot of water. As water is not available even for drinking, the farmers cannot even think of irrigation.
Under these circumstances, a young villager from Jarad village in Beed district has become a water-angel not only for residents of his own village but also for the surrounding villages. Rajesh Kakade sold the jewellery of his wife and dug a borewell in his courtyard. This borewell is now quenching the thirst of villagers of five villages.
Kakade said that considering the acute water scarcity in the village, he resolved to do something. However, he did not have money and hence he took his wife into confidence and asked her to give him her jewellery. She was convinced and gave her jewellery. He then dug a borewell. Instead of using the water on his farm for the bajra, sweet lemons and other crops, he chose to provide water to the villagers. Today, the villagers from five villages come and take water from his borewell, which is very satisfying for him and his family members, Kakade said.
