The Maharashtra Government is considering waiving toll tax on electric vehicles (EVs) plying on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg.

This is being done to increase the share of EVs in the state to 25%.

The proposal is likely to receive the nod from the state cabinet after the finance and other departments clear it, sources in the state secretariat told HT.

The proposal for a toll waiver, moved by the transport department, is part of the state’s new EV policy. It is likely to be rolled out from May 1.

Last month, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said his government would withdraw the proposed decision to levy a 6 per cent motor vehicle tax on EVs priced above ₹30 lakh.

According to the Economic Survey of Maharashtra, only 6 per cent of the 48.82 million vehicles in the state as of January 1, 2025, were EVs.

Delhi has 12 per cent EVs, Karnataka 9 per cent and Tamil Nadu 8 per cent.

Recently, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) said that toll charges won't be increased on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway till April 2030.

However, the transport body emphasised that the toll would increase on the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway from next April.
