Between 2021 and 2024, Pune recorded a total of 4,022 suicide cases, according to data accessed by The Free Press Journal. Of these, 2,849 were men and 1,173 were women.

The year-wise breakdown reveals a concerning but slightly declining trend: 1,080 suicide deaths were reported in 2021, followed by 1,056 in 2022, 1,023 in 2023 and 862 in 2024.

In a recent case, a 17-year-old minor girl ended her life by hanging herself at her home after her boyfriend refused to marry her.

The incident took place on March 23. However, a case was filed against a 17-year-old accused at the Fursungi Police Station on Tuesday.

According to the information received, the victim and the accused were neighbours and had been in contact for the last 4-5 years. Their families were also aware of their relationship. However, following a dispute that arose after the acussed refused to marry her, the girl took the extreme step of hanging herself.

Mangal Modhave, Senior Police Inspector, Fursungi Police Station, speaking to the Free Press Journal, said, "We have detained the minor accused and he will be produced in the Juvenile Justice Court. Later, he will be sent to the Juvenile Observation Home."

"The matter is three months old. However, the girl's mother lodged a police complaint on Tuesday," he added.
