Pimpri-Chinchwad: A 23-year-old man was arrested after allegedly killing a young man and seriously injuring a woman with an iron rod in Pune's Hinjawadi IT Park area over a suspected love affair, police said on Friday.
The accused, identified as Dinesh Mahadev Jhambre, a native of Palshi in Solapur district who was staying at Marunji near Hinjawadi, was caught by the Uruli Kanchan Police while he was trying to flee towards Pandharpur in an Ertiga car.
According to the police, Jhambre and the injured woman had been in a relationship since their school days. Later, both moved to Pune to study BCA. During this period, the woman reportedly developed a relationship with another young man. Police said Jhambre was upset over this.
On Thursday, August 6, Jhambre allegedly went to the place where the woman and the young man were staying. He attacked both of them with an iron rod and hit them on the head. The young man died on the spot, while the woman suffered serious injuries.
After the attack, Jhambre fled towards Pandharpur through the Pune-Solapur Highway in his Ertiga car. Hinjawadi Senior Police Inspector Balaji Pandhare alerted Uruli Kanchan Senior Police Inspector Vijaymala Pawar and shared details of the suspect and the vehicle.
Based on the information, the Uruli Kanchan Police set up a blockade on the Pune-Solapur Highway under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill, Additional Superintendent of Police Dr. Shubham Kumar and Sub-Divisional Police Officer Bapurao Dadas.
The police intercepted the speeding Ertiga near Uruli Kanchan Police Station and took Jhambre into custody. During questioning, he allegedly confessed to the murder and the attack, police said. The police also seized the vehicle.
