Junnar: CCTV footage has gone viral on social media showing two leopards roaming freely in a residential area. This video, captured in the Junnar area, has raised concerns about the safety of citizens.

According to available information, the leopards were sighted late Sunday night. Leopard sightings in Junnar and nearby areas are very common. Fortunately, no fatal attacks have been reported in recent days, though such incidents have occurred in the area in the past.

A user on X (formerly Twitter) shared this CCTV footage with the caption, "Just a regular thing in Junnar. Leopards in the garden of my maternal uncle at 11 p.m. last night."

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) states that the Junnar area has one of the highest leopard densities in India, with seven leopards per 100 sq km, which is considered high.

The area is favourable for leopards as sugarcane fields are present on a large scale here, providing dense cover and breeding grounds. The presence of livestock and domestic animals also means easy prey and food for leopards.

The Pune Division of the Maharashtra Forest Department also works to keep leopards away from residential areas, and whenever one is sighted, they try to capture it as soon as possible and release it back into the forest.
