In a significant move to ensure the free flow of vehicles, Pune City Traffic Police is set to take strict action and impose penalties on those obstructing public roads.

In an exclusive conversation with The Free Press Journal, Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police, said, "A dedicated team has been deployed to remove abandoned vehicles from city roads. These vehicles cause traffic congestion, especially on narrow roads."

According to Section 201 of the Motor Vehicles Act 2019, anyone who parks a vehicle in a public place in a manner that impedes traffic flow shall be liable for a penalty of up to ₹500, as long as the vehicle remains in that position.

If an agency authorised by the central or state government removes the vehicle, the removal charges shall be recovered from the vehicle owner or the person responsible for such vehicles. However, exceptions are made for vehicles that have broken down due to unforeseen circumstances.

The amendment also empowers uniformed police officers to arrest individuals without a warrant for offences under Sections 184, 185 or 197 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Notably, individuals arrested for drunk driving must undergo a medical examination within two hours of their arrest. If the examination is not conducted within the stipulated time, the individual must be released.

Patil added, "Initially, as per the Act, the fine amount was only ₹50 per hour. However, in 2019, the fine amount was increased to ₹500 per hour. We request citizens to be aware and follow traffic guidelines."
