The Pune Municipal Health Office, Pest Control Department, to commemorate National Dengue Day on May 16, organised a public campaign to encourage public participation in dengue control by raising awareness among citizens about the spread and prevention of dengue, as per the guidelines of the central government.
As the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which causes dengue, mainly breeds in urban areas, it is important for citizens to take personal hygiene measures. The slogan for National Dengue Day 2025 is “Check, Clean and Cover.” On this occasion, the 15 Zonal Offices of the Department of Pest Control conducted public awareness programmes, including:
- Prabhat Feri was conducted at various locations with the slogan "Check, Clean and Cover," to raise public awareness among citizens.
- Citizens were informed about dengue through the distribution of pamphlets and brochures.
- Stickers promoting dengue prevention were placed at Bhaji Mandai, Mazur Basahati, and bus stations.
- Direct information was provided about guppy fish and mosquito breeding.
- Citizens were informed that patients should provide their full address and mobile number when getting tested for dengue, especially in areas where no dengue cases have been reported so far.
- Private medical practitioners were advised to contact the Health Office’s Pest Control Department if dengue is diagnosed through blood tests.
- Instructions were given to regularly change the water in water tanks, money plant containers, fridge back trays, and coolers. Additionally, citizens were advised not to place trays under latches where water may collect.
- Information was provided that empty paint cans, coconut shells, vehicle tyres, and other waste materials, if kept on rooftops or terraces, can collect water and become mosquito breeding sites.
“Care should be taken to ensure that rainwater does not accumulate on tarpaulin sheets or on floors, especially during the rainy season. Since mosquito eggs stick to water reservoirs in the house, it is necessary to clean and dry all water containers once a week. It is requested that citizens observe a 'Dry Day' once a week,” said Assistant Health Officer of Pune Municipal Corporation, Dr Rajesh Dighe.
