The monsoon made a dramatic and record-breaking entry across Maharashtra, bringing with it heavy rains and flooding in several parts of the state, including Pune district. While the downpour provided much-needed relief from summer heat, it also led to waterlogging, wall collapses, and widespread disruption of daily life in Pune district.

In a tragic incident reported from Daund taluka, Pune, the first rain-related casualty in the state has come to light. A 75-year-old woman, Tarabai Vishwachand Ahir, lost her life after an old wall collapsed on her due to the intense rains.

According to reports, the elderly woman was sitting in a shop in Daund city when the wall of an old structure suddenly fell on her. Locals rushed her to the hospital immediately, but she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Officials believe that the wall collapse was triggered by the heavy and sudden downpour that has lashed the region since Sunday night. The wall was reportedly part of an aging structure, and its collapse was further exacerbated by the soaking rains.

Daund Tehsildar Arun Shelar visited the spot to assess the situation and directed necessary safety measures. As rain continues to batter the region, civic authorities have been put on alert, especially in areas with old or weakened structures.

Heavy rains lashed Baramati, Indapur and Daunda tehsils on Sunday, prompting the National Disaster Response Force to deploy two specialised teams on the urgent request of the district collector.

The May rain recorded in the three tehsils are unprecedented in the last 50 years, Pawar said while carrying out an inspection of affected areas with Collector Jitendra Dudi.
