The Maharashtra Government has officially notified the implementation of a four-member ward system for the upcoming Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections. The decision was published in the state gazette dated March 18, 2024, under Notification No. 23, as per the provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, 1949.

According to the new system, each electoral ward in Pune will now have four corporators representing it, instead of the previous single or multi-member arrangements. This change is intended to bring uniformity and improve representation in municipal governance.

Municipal authorities confirmed that the restructuring of wards will be conducted in compliance with the updated legal provisions under Section 5 of the Act. The state government emphasised that this reorganisation aims to ensure more equitable and effective governance at the city level.

Civic officials in Pune are now preparing to implement this new structure, which will be reflected in the next round of local body elections. Detailed ward maps and division structures are expected to be published soon.

The single-ward system, which was introduced in 2020, was later changed to a multi-member ward system with the provision of three members in 2022. The number has now been changed again to four.
