The family of a 49-year-old brain-dead man saved the lives of five people after his organs were donated on Monday.

The heart was allocated to HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, one kidney to Manipal Hospital, the other kidney to Noble Hospital and two corneas to HV Desai Eye Hospital.

A green corridor was created to transport his heart within two hours from Pune to Mumbai.

Dr Raj Kodre, Noble Hospital, Hadapsar said, "The patient, an engineer by profession, was admitted to the hospital on March 13 after meeting with an accident near Mundhwa. He was declared brain-dead on March 14. The neurosurgeons were able to get consent from the donor’s family through effective counselling. The multi-organ transplant successfully took place at the hands of our able surgeons. The heart had to be sent to Mumbai within the stipulated time for which we created a green corridor from the hospital to Mumbai."

"We are thankful to the family for their noble act and glad that we could save multiple lives through this," added Kodre.

"The team of doctors, including the neurophysician, neurosurgeon and intensivists performed this difficult task. In addition, the medical social worker explained the option of organ donation to the wife and daughter. They decided to go ahead with a multiorgan donation,” the expert further said.
