The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced plans to construct four new electric crematoriums in the city using funds from the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). These crematoriums will be built at Dasak, Nashik Road, Panchavati and Untwadi (CIDCO), similar to the existing facility in Nashik East Division.

The proposal was included in the NMC’s 2025-26 budget, and the Environment Department has confirmed that the expenditure will be covered under NCAP funds provided by the Central Government.

The Free Cremation Scheme at Amardham, run by the municipal corporation, offers materials and services for cremation and burial free of cost. Currently, diesel cremators are in use, but electric crematoriums are expected to provide a more efficient and eco-friendly alternative.

Handling of unidentified bodies

If an unidentified body remains unclaimed for four to five days, it is registered at the concerned police station. Following a post-mortem and legal procedures, the body is handed over to the municipal corporation for cremation. Many such unidentified bodies are cremated using electric crematoriums. The new electric crematoriums will ensure environment-friendly, cost-effective and efficient funeral services for the citizens of Nashik.

History of free funeral services

2002: The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance came to power in Nashik for the first time, introducing the free funeral scheme.

2003: Considering Nashik’s religious significance, the scheme was expanded, as many devotees visit the city for funerals and religious rituals.

Annual funding: NMC's health department allocates funds every year to continue this initiative.
