Pune: Maharashtra is getting ready to set up its inaugural dedicated heliport at the Hadapsar Gliding Centre located in Pune. The initiative represents an important advancement in enhancing regional air connectivity and strengthening the state's aviation infrastructure.

On May 26, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, reportedly revealed that the 230-acre site presently utilized by the Gliding Centre will be officially handed over to the Airports Authority of India to initiate development on the heliport.

The initiative promises to create new paths for quicker transportation, particularly to distant and hard-to-reach locations, while also aiding emergency services and boosting tourism in the area.

The Hadapsar Gliding Centre in Pune has historically been a focal point for aspiring pilots. Under the ownership of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, it has been essential in flight training for many years.

As per a directive from the Ministry of Civil Aviation dated March 4, 2022, it was noted that the land and infrastructure were leased to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for 99 years at a minimal annual rent of only Rs 1. The formal transfer of the 250-acre land was completed on December 31, 2024, allowing for the establishment of Maharashtra’s inaugural dedicated heliport.

He disclosed that preparations are in progress for an additional heliport in Pune district. Nevertheless, the location for this new project has not been confirmed yet.

Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol also revealed intentions to establish a premier aviation gallery at the Hadapsar location to enhance public fascination and knowledge regarding aviation. The exhibit will showcase aircraft replicas, flight simulators, historical presentations, and digital displays highlighting the history of civil and military aviation in India and around the world.

By merging this gallery with the heliport, the government aims to establish Maharashtra’s inaugural integrated aviation hub—merging infrastructure, education, tourism, and cultural significance.
