Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner, Pune City Traffic Police, on Monday conducted a Twitter (X) Live session and answered various queries of the citizens, including the helmet rule, issuance of challans, etc.
Below are the questions posed by the citizens and the answers given by Patil:
Q: The number of vehicles without number plates is increasing, especially two-wheelers where rear plates are removed. Traffic police don’t check two-wheelers anymore at signals, which need to restart!
A: Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will work on improving the enforcement.
Q: Jumping a traffic signal is equivalent to attempting murder in any civilised country. We can easily find thousands of vehicles doing so at any busy intersection during the entire 24 hours. Let us improve and make Pune a model of traffic governance to set an example.
A: Though we differ on the equivalence part, I agree with your thoughts. We are working on ITMS, AI, and manual traffic enforcement.

Q: Is the towing of vehicles still allowed? And if the announcement is mandatory, then why doesn’t the Pune Police announce before picking up vehicles? Don’t say you announce — I have dashcam videos showing otherwise.
A: Towing vehicles are allowed in Pune city. Policemen are instructed to announce before picking up the vehicles. And if the owner reaches before the towing vehicle lifts the vehicle, the vehicle gets exempted from the towing charges. Any aberration in this regard may kindly be reported.
Q: Why is it difficult to enforce basic rules in Pune, such as red signals and correct side driving?
A: We have already doubled the number of traffic challans for overall violations, and there is a 400% increase in issuing challans against wrong-side driving and triple-seat riding.
