Day 2 of the Pune International Literary Festival 2024 (PILF) on Sunday saw a discussion on one of the world's oldest civilizations—the Harappan Civilization. The session was marked by fascinating anecdotes from history, featuring celebrated author and mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik. In conversation with Bipinchandra Chaugule, Pattanaik delved into his latest work, Ahimsa: 100 Reflections on the Harappan Civilization, captivating the audience with his unique insights.

The discussion centered on Pattanaik’s exploration of the Harappan Civilization’s enduring impact on Indian culture and thought. Known for its urban planning, art, and enigmatic script, the Harappan culture has been a subject of intrigue for historians and archaeologists. Pattanaik, however, approached the topic through the lens of mythology, shedding light on how Harappan values, such as non-violence (ahimsa), shaped later Vedic and Tantrik traditions.

“The Harappans left us clues to a world that valued peace, cooperation, and sustainability,” Pattanaik remarked. He highlighted the absence of war and romance in Harappan art, contrasting it with the martial and passionate themes prevalent in other ancient cultures. He also spoke about the history of the bangle culture, which exists nowhere else in the world except in our culture, and the invention of the game of snakes and ladders in India. Additionally, he discussed how horses became important in the trading business and how the decentralization of the Harappan civilization occurred as trade expanded.

Bipinchandra Chaugule skillfully guided the conversation, engaging Pattanaik in discussions about the significance of the Harappan script, its mysterious decline, and the civilization’s legacy in modern India.

Kanitkars and their relationship

In another session, the audience was amazed by Lt Gen (retd) Madhuri Kanitkar and Lt Gen (retd) Rajeev Kanitkar as they discussed their unique bond and upcoming book Balancing Bonds: A Journey of Growing Together.

The conversation delved into how spending time together in a long-distance relationship often feels special, but sustaining a 36-year marriage while being apart for 24 years due to separate postings in the armed forces is truly extraordinary. As the first couple in the armed forces to achieve the three-star rank, they shared personal anecdotes, challenges, and lessons on balancing professional commitments with personal growth and relationships. Kanitkar recalled a visit by Kiran Bedi, the first woman IPS officer in the country, to MUHS for its silver jubilee. “

She encouraged us to write a book. But it was Rajeev who decided to write my biography. Since our lives are so intertwined, we agreed on a collaborative approach. He would write the chapters, and I would provide a short summary at the end of each one, sharing my perspective,” said Kanitkar.
