Guillain-Barré Syndrome In Pune: Kirkatwadi Woman Dies At Sassoon Hospital, Death Tally Reaches 3, 127 Cases Statewide

Even as the cases of the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) are increasing in Pune along with few other districts, death talley in the disease is also increasing. After a death of a CA from Dhayari, now a woman from Kirkatwadi is suspected to have died of GBS.

On Sunday, a 40-year-old man from Solapur died of suspected GBS. Before this an elderly women succumbed to GBS-related complications in Pimpri Chinchwad.

And now on Tuesday, a 56-year-old woman from Pune with co-morbidities is suspected to have succumbed to GBS at the state-run Sassoon General Hospital. She was the resident of Nandoshi in Kirkatwadi.

GBS is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs, loose motions, etc.

Bacterial and viral infections generally lead to GBS as they weaken the immunity of patients, and in the present case, the disease is suspected to have been triggered by contaminated water, according to doctors.

127 cases so far

A day after crossing the 100-mark, the GBS cases in Pune district have now risen to 127, with two reported fatalities due to the immunological nerve disorder.

Of the total cases, 23 patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation areas, 73 are from the newly merged villages under PMC, 13 are from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, 9 are from Pune Rural, and 9 are from other districts.

Out of these, 20 people are on ventilator and two deaths have been reported.

The surge in cases has raised concerns among residents and health officials, prompting urgent measures, including the reservation of hospital beds and increased public awareness on preventive steps. Tingling, weakness of hand-grip or foot drop could signal Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), said health experts on Monday, even as the reported cases spike to over a hundred in Pune, Maharashtra.
