The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune's former head of the weather forecasting division and Scientist G, Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, has formed a Senior Citizens' Association in Pune with the aim of benefiting society. The association will host a get-together function for its members on February 16.
Kashyapi said, "As retirees, we are not used to sitting idle; we can still contribute, and we will work for the benefit of society. With our vast scientific knowledge, we will create awareness among people in Pune regarding weather and climate change. We will educate school and college students at the village, city, and state levels by providing first-hand experience in the field of weather and climate."
Kashyapi explained how he came up with the idea: "After retiring from service, I had a lot of free time, and sometimes loneliness would bother me. My former colleagues and I have vast experience and knowledge in weather and climate change, so we thought, why not put this knowledge to use for the betterment of society and to keep ourselves busy? That’s when the idea to gather all former IMD employees under one umbrella came about."

Who are the members?
The members are all meteorologists, weather scientists, or weather instrument specialists. Some are former heads or even scientific advisors to the Government of India (Scientist G), and others are former members of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) working groups.
A small core team has been formed, led by Kashyapi, with key members including Sikandar Jamadar, Mairal Bhoskar, and Dr. Khare. The motto of this group is to explore and support the people, society, and even farmers. The group will also engage in various social activities, including helping distressed members of society over time.
Objectives and Outline of Work:
To benefit senior citizens and super senior citizens, providing emotional and medical support when needed, and ensuring they can enjoy life (even with their families) through small get-togethers, annual meetings, picnics, light entertainment, and short discussions.
To create awareness among people in Pune and Maharashtra about a potential scientific group with vast knowledge of weather, climate, and climate change, which has been accumulated through 30 to 40 years of dedicated service at IMD.
To share this vast knowledge to educate school and college students at the village, city, and state levels, providing them with first-hand experience in the field of weather and climate.
To support farmers by offering weather-based advisories to help them better utilize weather-related products and determine the best crops to plant in specific locations.
To assist IMD in their work as needed. The Senior Citizens' Association of Pune currently has around 300 members, while the serving employees in Pune number over 350. The strength of these experienced former IMD employees can be explored over time in various directions.
To support local governance by providing weather and climate-related input, which is increasingly needed.
