With reports of muddy tap water following heavy rains in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued an advisory to boil drinking water before consumption.

PMC on Wednesday issued an advisory urging citizens to follow precautions to safeguard their health following torrential rains in the city which has increased the risk of waterborne diseases that could spread by drinking contaminated water.

The advisory said that people should use alum, purify and boil water.

"From last few days catchment areas is receiving heavy rainfall and so muddy water is flowing in dams and canals. PMC is also treating this water and the water quality is good. But as a precaution residents should filter or boil drinking water," said the advisory.

Contaminated water and poor sanitation can cause transmission of waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera, typhoid fever and hepatitis. The advisory has been issued considering newly merged villages like Narhe, Dhayari, Nanded, Khadakwasla.

Notably, last year, the areas saw a huge outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome which killed at least 10 people in Pune district.

Pune city gets water mainly from Khadakwasla, Varasgaon, Panshet and Temghar dams.
