Why the humble calendar can never be replaced

From today, the prices of veggies in the market will soar high. And you shall witness lesser crowd at the fish market than the usual on Wednesday, Friday or Sunday. High prices of vegetables and less takers for fish, has got nothing to do with the ‘Formalin Scare’ prevailing in the neighboring State of Goa. According to the Hindu calendar we have today ventured into the holy month of Shravan (similar to the Lent observed by the Christians and Ramadan observed by the Muslims). And just down the line, we have our Independence Day (August 15) and on the very same day we also celebrate the Nag Panchami (worshipping the Snake God), followed by the Bakri Eid and Raksha Bandhan in the days ahead to come, but all in one single month of August.

How do I manage to keep a track of all these important days and forthcoming events? I have the same learned and informative friend just as yours, the CALENDAR. Have we ever given a thought how important a Calendar is in our day to day activities? Irrespective of its size, language or where it is displayed or carried, it always ensures to play a major role in our life.

In January we visit our bank more than once, in anticipation that the person who updates our passbook would hand over a complimentary calendar printed by the bank for their account holders. Once we receive this yearly gift, we compare it with our neighbours or relatives bank calendar announcing proudly that our bank cares for the senior citizens more than yours, as the font of the dates and events are much bigger in size and even an octogenarian can clearly read it.

Youngsters still have a fetish for pocket calendars, which they smartly bring it out during group outings or some important college meetings. They display their liking for a particular actor, sportsperson or cars usually making their presence felt on the rear side of the calendar. Nowadays, we also have calendars in form of car hangings, ensuring you that no important date drives out of your memory to avoid personal crash at home-front.

Those who keep their monthly fitness targets usually scribble their weight on the first few days on calendar. And once the month comes to an end a few more scribblings are done to make it a comparative weight chart. Some use it as a monthly payment reckoner keeping tabs on various monthly out goings on specific days. Those who believe in astrology or in auspicious or inauspicious time zone, the monthly horoscope plays the role of the guiding light.

Despite mobile phones taking over various functions and providing modern alternatives to creativity and connectivity, it has not been able to replace a calendar. Even the desktops and laptops haven’t. Despite all these modern tools of technology having inbuilt calendar, most of us still opt for the one on our desk or nailed to the nearest wall. As the months pass by, we move from the start to finish and back to the starting page of the calendar. And that’s yet another symbol of ‘Life has come Full Circle’.
