Navi Mumbai: In a major green initiative, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced a target of planting 1.25 lakh trees over the course of the year, beginning with a mega tree plantation drive on World Environment Day, June 5, 2025. The campaign will span across all eight civic divisions, reinforcing the city’s commitment to biodiversity and sustainable urban development.

The activity this year is in line with the global theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution”, the drive is part of NMMC’s Environment Week celebrations. "The focus will be on planting indigenous species to enhance the ecological balance and boost the habitat for local birdlife," said an official.

Navi Mumbai has a green cover of over 15.5 lakh trees. With the addition of 1.25 lakh more this year, the civic body hopes to significantly expand its green lungs.

The main event will take place at Parsik Hill, CBD Belapur, starting at 9:00 AM on June 5, near the Belapur water tank. "Native varieties such as Surangi, Jamun, Mulberry, Cashew, Amla, and Bamboo will be planted. Residents have been urged to join the efforts in large numbers," informed the official.

Simultaneously, tree plantations will be held at designated locations in Digha, Airoli, Ghansoli, Koparkhairane, Vashi, Turbhe/Sanpada, and Nerul, with over a dozen parks and open spaces chosen for the event. Species include Neem, Karanj, Bakul, Parijat, and Golden Bamboo.

NMMC officials emphasized that citizen participation is key to the success of the campaign. "This is not just about planting trees, but about creating lasting green infrastructure that supports Navi Mumbai’s ecological and environmental health," an official said.

The corporation has appealed to residents to participate either at the flagship event in CBD Belapur or at their nearest local event, helping the city move closer to its ambitious 1.25 lakh tree plantation goal.
