Bhagoji Keer, an artisan-turned-businessman, was born in Killa area of Ratnagiri in a poor family. In his early days, he learnt carpentry work from a government school in Rajiwada area of Ratnagiri. His talent was tapped by Shapoorji Palonji, a rich businessman from Mumbai. Palonji was impressed by the integrity and honesty of Bhagoji Keer and led him towards success and prosperity. Even though Keer became rich and acquired huge wealth and property, he did not forget his society and religion. He constructed temples, buildings, dharmashalas and ghats on the banks of rivers and Hindu crematories at Mumbai, Pune, Alandi, Ratnagiri and at various other places.
