The GVK Group known for spanning diverse sectors including energy, resources, airports and transportation today unveiled the first look of the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The GVK group had taken inspiration from 'peacock' for designing Mumbai's Terminal 2.

The Indian government and the Government of Maharashtra visualised the Navi Mumbai International Airport through CIDCO and GVK Mumbai International Airport Limited had been developing the airport as a partner.

For Navi Mumbai International Airport, the GVK has drawn inspiration from lotus flower. The design of NMIA blends modernity with Indian ethos, art and culture in a mesmerising architectural style.

It has been designed by globally acclaimed architectural firm Zaha Hadid, who have also designed the Beijing Daxing International Airport. The Central terminal complex will be at the heart of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which will be a cluster of three interconnected multi-level terminals planned around a landscaped central forecourt with multimodal transportation hub.

The GVK Group released a video to showcase the full design of the NMIA.

The airport aims to serve 90 million passengers per year.

The NMIA is planned with dual entrances from both directions - West and East. The airport is planned to be implemented in four phases with two parallel runways capable of simultaneous operations with high-speed expressway suburban rail metro and water transport connectivity. It will be serving both domestic and international traffic and equipped with next-gen technology.

The central terminal complex is connected by 9+9 lanes planned along a landscaped main airport access road. The western and northern part of the airport is planned for passenger-related facilities and other purposes. While, the eastern part of NMIA shall be used for cargo, MRO and general aviation, thus segregating vehicular traffic between the two entrances.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on November 5 had set an ambitious deadline of May 2021 for the completion of the Rs 16,256 crore Navi Mumbai international airport by the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL). The Fadnavis government had given a deadline of commissioning of the first phase in December 2019 which was later rescheduled twice to May 2020 and December 2020 for handling 10 million passengers annually.
