Mumbai: Meter box of a building at Kandivali catches fire, 5 critical

The five critical included two children and two women, who were admitted to ICU at Oscar hospital in Kandivali. Other 22 were rushed to Shatabdi hospital and are said to be stable.

Mumbai: A level-one fire broke out at a building in Ekta Nagar in Kandivli west on Tuesday -- in the meter box, around 9 am. The residents rushed outside while some were trapped on the terrace of the seven-storey building. Around 40 to 45 people were rescued, of whom 22 were hospitalised and five were reported to be critical, including two children and two women.

The five critical residents were admitted in the ICU at Oscar Hospital in Kandivli. The other 22 were rushed to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital and are said to be stable.

The fire brigade, police and the ambulance reached the spot and rescued those trapped. The blaze erupted around 9 am in the electric meter room of the MHADA building at Jankalyan Nagar.

In no time, smoke enveloped the building; some residents were trapped inside and others on its terrace, an official said. Fire brigade officials with three vehicles, police and an ambulance rushed to the spot and undertook the rescue operation. Around 22 people were admitted to the general ward of the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital, Kandivli, while five were admitted at Oscar Hospital, Kandivali, and are critical.
