The United States has increased the tariff on fish and fish products from 16.5% in April to 60% in August, causing concern among fish producers. However, Minister Nitesh Rane said the extra tariff imposed by the US is not a challenge but an opportunity. He made the remarks during a press conference held at Mantralaya.
US Tariff Doubled in Recent Days
The US has levied an additional tariff on Indian fish products, which has doubled in the past few days. In response, the State Minister for Fisheries and Ports Development, Nitesh Rane, has appealed to fisheries stakeholders via Twitter.

Turning a Challenge into an Opportunity
Speaking at the Mantralaya press conference, Minister Rane said, “The additional tariff imposed by the US on India is not a challenge but an opportunity for us. It is a great chance to move towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India).”
Domestic Market as the Way Forward
Rane emphasised that the domestic market offers an excellent alternative to overcome the impact of US tariffs. He said this approach could yield significant profits for fisheries through local sales while also boosting the country’s economic revenue.
