Mumbai: The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, marked a significant milestone for Mumbai’s maritime sector by flagging off cruise operations from the newly launched New Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) on Monday. This move is set to enhance Mumbai’s position as a major global cruise hub, offering enhanced services for both international and domestic tourists.

During the ceremony, the Union Minister also inaugurated several other key projects. He unveiled the renovated Fire Memorial at Victoria Docks, a symbol of Mumbai’s rich maritime history, and the Fort House Ballard Estate and Evelyn House at Colaba.

An X post shared by the minister, stated, "Adding momentum to the Cruise Bharat Mission, delighted to launch commercial operations from the brand new Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) along with Union MoS Shri Shantanu_bjp ji. India's largest cruise terminal, MICT is designed to handle upto 1 million passengers a year, with the capacity to manage five cruise ships at a time. Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji's vision of making Bharat a global cruise hub is pushing us to develop world-standard infra for tourists, resulting in a 454% increase in cruise passengers in the last 10 years. With the aim of 1 million cruise passengers by 2029, MICT will bolster India's goal to be a top cruise destination."

Additionally, Sonowal inaugurated Sagar Upvan, a lush green garden designed to provide both locals and tourists with a peaceful environment. As part of the government’s commitment to sustainability, the minister also launched the Shore to Ship Electric Supply under the Green Port Initiative.

The new cruise terminal is expected to bring in more tourists and improve connectivity between Mumbai and international cruise destinations. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of promoting tourism, infrastructure, and green initiatives to enhance Mumbai’s port facilities and boost its economy.

The event highlights the government's continuous efforts in modernizing Mumbai’s port infrastructure while maintaining a balance with environmental sustainability and cultural heritage preservation. This significant step is a testament to India’s growing influence in the global maritime industry and its commitment to promoting sustainable tourism.
