In a historic recognition of Maharashtra's rich military and cultural legacy, UNESCO has granted World Heritage status to 12 forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The recognized sites include 11 forts from Maharashtra — such as Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Shivneri, Panhala, Lohgad, and others — along with Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu, under the collective title “Maratha Military Landscapes.”

Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar described the recognition as a proud moment for Maharashtra, placing the Maratha legacy on the global map. These forts reflect the strategic genius of Shivaji Maharaj, who utilised rugged terrain and innovative architecture — including Machi structures and concealed gateways — to build a resilient defense network.

The proposal was meticulously prepared by Maharashtra’s Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, with support from the Archaeological Survey of India. The selection followed extensive evaluations by UNESCO experts, including a field visit by ICOMOS in 2024.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union agencies coordinated with UNESCO and global diplomats to secure the nomination. The recognition is expected to boost fort conservation, tourism, and local economies, while honoring the valor and vision of Shivaji Maharaj.
