The crime branch unit attached to the MiraBhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police commissionerate apprehended two men who were found to be in possession of two country-made Mauser pistols, two magazines and four live bullets in Mira Road on Friday night.
The accused, identified as Mukesh Kanhaiyalal Mali (30) and Bunty Kailashji Suryavanshi (20) hail from Mandsaur city in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh and are suspected to be key members of an interstate arms dealer gang.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Senior Police Inspector- Jitendra Vankoti and Assistant Police Inspector- Pravin Swami under the supervision of DCP (crime)-Dr. Mahesh Patil laid a trap and apprehended the suspects from the street leading to Srushti complex in Mira Road at around 8:40 pm on Friday.
On frisking the duo, the police team recovered two country-made Mauser pistols, two magazines and four live bullets valued at more than Rs.72,000. Not ruling out more arrests in the case, the police are conducting in-depth investigations to ascertain the origin and destination of the firearms.
Meanwhile, an offence under sections 3 and 25 of the Indian Arms Act and sections 37(1)(3),135 of the Maharashtra Police Act-1951 has been registered against them at the Naya Nagar police station which is further investigating the case.
