Mumbai :  In an attempt to make its traffic management smooth, effective and efficient, the Mumbai traffic police are planning to increase the number of traffic police divisions in Mumbai by at least 10 in the next couple of months.

A proposal for the plan is currently being prepared by the officers of the traffic police who are trying to figure out the division of various areas of Mumbai into the 10 new traffic police divisions. “Currently there are only 25 traffic police divisions in the city, some of which have to handle areas that constitute jurisdictions of seven to eight local police stations. This puts a huge strain on the staff and officers of the existing divisions and leads to problems in the management of traffic,” said an officer attached with the traffic police.

In every traffic police division there are 10 to 15 officers and a staff of 150. At present the strength of the traffic police, including those posted at its headquarter in Worli is approximately 3,000. The increase in the number of traffic police divisions would let the traffic police to increase its might at the divisions by at least 1500.

The increase in the traffic divisions will enable a more narrowed down and definite control of traffic on the various roads and flyovers of the city, especially with the traffic in the city increasing with every passing day.

Officers engaged in the preparation of proposals are busy creating new boundaries on maps of Mumbai and dividing it in such a way that would make it easier for the divisions to operate in terms of jurisdictions. In certain cases, some important roads are divided between two traffic police divisions or two police stations, which creates confusion when it comes to jurisdiction when a complaint has to be filed.
