Mumbai : Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has send 12 samples of Johnson and Johnson, Shower and Shower, Nycil, Dermi Cool and Ponds powder for lab testing at FDA laboratory in Bandra. This has come after a month that J&J was found liable for fraud and negligence in an American civil suit in a case of death of a 62-year-old woman due to ovarian cancer after sustained use of the powder.
Harshadeep Kamble, state FDA Commissioner, said, “We have collected samples of J&J and other brands as well for precautionary measures. We have sent nearly eight to twelve samples of the brands from Mumbai and Thane region. The results are expected to be out in 15 days, following which a decision will be taken.”
The state FDA also had a discussion with the company officials on the matter and has asked them to submit the necessary data and information on the baby products produced by them in the country. Further, the criteria for the lab testing include presence of metals, chemicals including ethylene and other harmful toxic acids.
A senior official from the FDA said, “Three to four years back, J&J company products were found with presence of ethylene in India. The presence of ethylene residue oxide leads to irreparable damage and cancer and is harmful for infants. Therefore, we will be looking out for its presence and levels in the current products to ensure that the products are safe for usage.”
