Thane: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has succeeded in depositing Rs 253 crore in its coffers as a property tax. According to the Thane civic body officials, out of Rs 253 crore an amount of Rs 141 crore has been collected in the last month. Also, more than Rs 22 crore has been recovered this year as compared to last year.

The Thane civic body gets income through various taxes and property tax is considered to be the major source of income for the civic body. During the Corona period, the corporation did not get the expected collection of taxes other than property tax. In last year's budget, a target of Rs 693.24 crore was set for property tax collection. After that, the target was reduced to Rs 650 crore. But by the end of the financial year, the corporation was able to recover Rs 592 crore. Therefore, the objective set by the municipality could not be achieved. Against this backdrop, the municipal administration started collecting property tax payments in April this year.

In this year's budget, the Thane civic body set a target of Rs 713 crore 77 lakh for property tax. Various efforts are being made by the municipal administration to achieve the target. The municipal corporation has implemented a tax relief scheme. By the end of May, Rs 112 crore had been deposited in the municipal coffers as property tax.

Earlier under TMC additional commissioner Sanjay Herwade, a special team was formed at ward levels to collect property tax.

Sanjay Herwade, additional commissioner, TMC said, " The tax relief scheme introduced by us helped us in collecting an amount of Rs 141 crore and it has been deposited in the Thane Municipal Corporation coffers. The corporation has so far collected Rs. 253.09 crore from property tax. During the same period last year, an amount of Rs 230 crore 44 lakh was deposited in the municipal coffers. In comparison, Rs 22 crore 65 lakh more tax has been collected this year. We will be focusing on increasing our tax collection amount every year henceforth."

The property tax collected from various wards are like from Uthalsar Rs 20.87 crore, Naupada-Kopri Rs 40.25 crore, Kalwa Rs 8.62 crore, Mumbra Rs 8.95 crore, Diva Rs 7.83 crore, Wagle Estate Rs 8.33 crore, Lokmanya-Savarkar Nagar Rs 9.26 crore, Vartak Nagar Rs 47.40 crore, Majiwada-Manpada Rs 87.54 crore.
