Thane: Residents of the Saptashrungi building have given a letter to the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation seeking rehabilitation after they have been homeless. The concrete flooring slab of the fourth floor collapsing onto the ground floor, resulting in six deaths and six injuries.

Around 200 residents were living in the 52 rooms of the ground plus four-story building, which was built in 1994. They are now homeless, and the KDMC has provided temporary shelter at Nutan Vidyamandir School in Kalyan East, and additionally, the KDMC provided meals and breakfast to the residents. On Thursday, a group of the residents marched from Tisgaon to the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation Headquarters.

A letter was signed by 46 residents and submitted to KDMC, demanding rehabilitation for 52 residents and compensation for the deceased and injured persons from the building tragedy.

The letter mentioned that a resident of the fourth floor, Krishan Chaurasiya, started renovating his room without appropriate permission from the Society. Due to the renovation work, the concrete flooring slab of the room collapsed on May 20 at 2 PM.

They stated in the letter that after the incident, they were all evacuated and moved to Nutan Vidyamandir School temporarily. All residents' belongings were in the room. They are facing several difficulties on a daily basis while living in the shelter. Hence, they demanded their rehabilitation.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Avdhut Tawade said, "There has not been any provision in such cases for rehabilitation. We can only provide temporary shelter."
