Thane Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with the traffic police department, has initiated the installation of tyre killers on Shivaji Maharaj Path near the Thane railway station locality on Sunday to prevent vehicles and two-wheelers from entering the wrong side.
This initiative aims to smooth the city’s traffic and reduce accidents, as well as congestion in the traffic.
Initially, the TMC and the traffic department decided to install tyre killers at three locations: Subhash Path near the railway station area, Gaondevi temple area, and B Cabin area.
TMC officials said that these three locations have a higher incidence of wrong-side driving and traffic congestion, posing a risk of accidents.
According to the traffic officials, the purpose of installing tyre killers is to prevent vehicles from entering in the wrong side in city and, improve traffic management, and reduce accidents which is caused by driving on the wrong side of the road, Signboards have also been placed 100 and 200 meters before the tire killers, warning drivers not to drive on the wrong side, as tire killers are ahead. The lighting should be ensured in this zone.

This experiment is being carried out by the TMC and the traffic department to reduce traffic, streamline the city’s traffic, and prevent vehicles from driving on the wrong side of the road. After the success of the pilot project, tire killers will be installed on all one-way roads in the city.
DCP Pankaj Shirsat from Thane Traffic said, "The TMC has decided to install tyre killers in three places. Signboards have been placed ten days ago before the tyre killers installed on Shivaji Path. Now, vehicles driving on the wrong side will be stopped."
Tyre killers puncture the tyres if vehicles move on the wrong side. Tyre killers come out and spike, which directly pierces the tyre if the vehicle attempts to pass over it. The spikes of tyre killers are very large and puncture the tyre, causing damage and its need to replacement.
