The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced the construction of an elevated road along the Eastern Express Highway, spanning from Anand Nagar to Saket in Thane. This 8.24-kilometer-long project, consisting of a six-lane corridor (three lanes in each direction), aims to decongest the city’s traffic by providing an alternative route for vehicles passing through Thane without entering the city.

"The elevated road will commence from Anand Nagar, within Mumbai’s limits, and extend up to the Kharegaon Toll Naka. The project has an estimated cost of Rs 2,188.62 crore and is expected to be completed in 48 months, including a 24-month defect liability period," a senior MMRDA official said.

"While a tree survey is still underway to assess the number of affected trees, environmental clearance is not required for most of the project," the official said adding, a 120-meter-long section of the Kalwa Bridge requires clearance for which the approval process is currently in progress.

This elevated road will provide significant relief to traffic congestion in Thane by diverting vehicles that do not need to enter the city. As a result, local traffic movement is expected to improve, reducing travel time and enhancing road safety.

The authorities are confident that the project will enhance urban mobility while balancing environmental concerns.
