Thane: Mentally unstable mother abandons infant in local train, held

The baby was rescued by the constable and handed over to Vashi Railway police who later sent her to an orphanage in Nerul.

The Vashi Railway police arrested the woman who had allegedly abandoned her one-year-old baby girl on the Panvel-CST train on Sunday night. The woman left the baby in a bucket in the women's coach of the train and alighted at Seawoods Darave station.

Sambhaji Katare, police inspector from Vashi Railway police station said the woman was arrested on July 6. “In the initial investigation, it has been revealed that the woman is mentally unstable,” said Katare.

Police said that the woman hails from Akola and she was identified with the help of CCTV footage of the railway station.

On Sunday night around 10.30 pm, a co-passenger noticed and alerted the police constable on duty at the women's coach that a woman was abandoned in a bucket. The constable also noticed the woman alighting from the train at Seawoods Darave station.

The baby was rescued by the constable and handed over to Vashi Railway police who later sent her to an orphanage in Nerul. The Vashi Railway Police have already registered a case under Section 317 against the woman who abandoned the infant in the running train.
