Thane: The Anti-Extortion Cell of the Thane Police has arrested an RTI activist for allegedly caught red-handed while taking money from a hotelier in Kalyan.
Accused threatened false complaint to extort money
According to a press release, the hotelier filed a written complaint alleging that the accused, identified as Nitin Ghole, threatened to lodge a false complaint against him.
Acting on the complaint, a trap was laid near Santosh Hotel in Kalyan West on July 21. Ghole was caught red-handed while accepting ₹50,000.
FIR filed under BNS, further probe underway
An FIR has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita at Mahatma Phule Police Station. He was produced in court and remanded to police custody until July 25 for further investigation.
Ghole also targeted government staff and police
Shailesh Salvi, Senior Police Inspector stated that during the probe, it was revealed that Ghole had also allegedly threatened government employees, including police personnel, with false cases to extort money from them. The Anti-Extortion Cell said further investigation is underway.
