Thane: The Child Welfare Committee and local police in Ulhasnagar have foiled a family attempt to marry off a 16-year-old girl after receiving a call from an unknown person about a child marriage that would be performed at a designated venue in Ulhasnagar, an official said on Wednesday.
The police said that on February 24, in the afternoon, the child welfare helpline in Pune, number 1098, received a call from an unknown person about a child marriage that would be performed at a hall in the OT section area of Ulhasnagar.
Thereafter, the CWC and authorities visited the designated venue after obtaining information. Upon verifying the birth certificate and relevant documents of the girl, they discovered that she is about 16 years and three months old. They stopped the marriage proceedings. Following this, the girl was detained and presented before the Child Welfare Committee and subsequently sent to a remand home, said a police officer.
Anil Jagtap, Senior Police Inspector of Hilline Police Station, said, "We have registered an FIR against the parents of the bride, the groom, and their relatives under sections 9, 10, and 11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2005. So far, no one has been arrested yet. Further investigation into this matter is ongoing."
