Mumbai : The Bombay High Court on Friday directed the State government to submit a report within a week on the preventive measures taken to curb the spread of typhoid in Pune.

One person is reported to have died and around 40 have fallen prey to typhoid due to the polluted water being supplied to Rajgurunagar in Khed taluka, around 30 kilometers from Pune.

A public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Amruta D, a resident of Pune, has urged that it is obligation of the authorities to provide clean water to to residents of Rajgurunagar and other adjoining areas.

The authorities have only issued a pamphlet to villagers that states that the water is supplied from a pipeline that is polluted.

Advocate for the petitioner argued that there is only one primary health centre for 30 villages in that area. The water available there is also contaminated as the pipeline providing water to the entire district comes from infected River Bhima.

Justice Anoop V. Mohta and Justice S. G. Gupte ordered the State government to take immediate action in this regard. Justice Mohta said, “The government pleader should file a compliance report within a week on the ad hoc preventive measures the state has taken to curb the spread of typhoid and other water-borne diseases in and around Rajgurunagar.”
