Mumbai : Shiv Sena leaders in the BMC on Wednesday demanded that the BJP-led state government should quickly come to a decision regarding providing the city with water from the Bhatsa Lake. This lake comes under the control of the state government’s irrigation department. It is completely the prerogative of this department to decide if water from Bhatsa will be used for irrigation or for the city’s daily consumption.

The BMC’s hydraulics department wrote to the state government regarding this issue in mid-October but no decision has been reached yet. Sena corporators from the BMC have alleged that the state government is sitting on the file and has deliberately refused to take a decision regarding the issue.

Trushna Vishwasrao (in pic), leader of the house in the BMC, said, “We have requested Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to sanction releasing water from Bhatsa. This should have been done by now as it has been over three weeks that BMC sent the letter. This may solve the issue of water cuts in the city.”

When Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee announced the BMC’s water cut policy last month, he assured Mumbaikars that a policy review meeting would be conducted on October 1. This meeting involved talks with the irrigation department of the state government for releasing water from state-controlled lakes — Bhatsa and the Upper Vaitarna. Official sources informed that the meeting did not take place.

The BMC had to maintain the 15 per cent cut in water supply and the 20 per cent cut in the timing of water supply. Both cuts are here to stay till the next monsoon. Engineers from the hydraulics department were unavailable for an update.
