Mumbai: Swedish company Candela has been selected to implement the pilot project for electric water taxi services.
About The Decision
The announcement came following a meeting between the state minister for fisheries and ports, Nitesh Rane, and Swedish Consul General Sven Ostberg. At the meeting, Rane highlighted the need to reduce traffic congestion in Mumbai and noted that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is keen on launching the project as soon as possible.
The first two routes will be to Elephanta and Alibaug from the Gateway of India. As per the agreement, the Swedish company must keep passenger safety as top priority, with affordable fares. The state government has assured support in acquiring the necessary permits to expedite the project.
Apart from discussing the e-water taxi project, Consul General Ostberg also expressed Sweden’s interest in the development of Maharashtra’s ports. Rane suggested that a Swedish delegation visit Sassoon Dock in early April, following which the Consulate will submit a proposal to the state government with recommendations. This initiative aims to make Sassoon Dock a model port, setting a benchmark for future projects.
