The Supreme Court has cleared the path of redevelopment of the historic Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Bazar (Crawford Market), located near the CSMT station. The important decision to make the ground floor of the two-storey low-rise building with underground parking in the Market Redevelopment under Phase-II has been passed.
The parking lot will have the capacity to park 198 vehicles with 20 trucks at a time. It would ease the parking problem in the Fort area. The BMC had planned to develop the Crawford Market in two phases — ‘Phase-1’ and ‘Phase-II’. In 2008, the Heritage Conservation Committee, in its report to the market, had given the status of Heritage-1 to repair and redevelopment.
Under the project, redevelopment of Phase-1 started in September 2014. Market vendors had approached the Supreme Court challenging the redevelopment of Phase-II, which halted the work. Now, when the Supreme Court has delivered the decision favouring the BMC, the market redevelopment will be speedly start. Under the redevelopment of Crawford Market, a two-storey parking will be built.
The market will be equipped with all the necessary aminities like service elevators, firefighting systems, mechanical ventilations and segregation of waste equipment, which is essential for a market, including effluent treatment plants. The space to load, unload and evacuate the freight train will also be provided. It is expected that the project will be completed by 2022.
