Mumbai : To commemorate a century of great scientist Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, Sudheendra Kulkarni chairman of Observer Research Foundation (ORF) requested to the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to install a memorial in the Mumbai city.
Kulkarni in a letter to the Chief Minister Fadnavis requested that the state should join the international community in the celebration of the historic event. He further urged him to name some road or a squire in Mumbai after Einstein.
A century ago, on November 25, Einstein had presented General Theory of Relativity that explains the forces of gravity in terms of warping of space and time. It had given a framework to describe the cosmos and exotic objects like black hole and gravity waves for the first time.
Kulkarni underlined that Mumbai has done nothing to honour Einstein’s memory publicly. The city lags far behind other international cities in commemorating prominent global personalities in science, arts, culture, literature and politics. The ORF had suggested that the state should appeal to schools, colleges and universities in state to commemorate the century of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity.
Maharashtra has a unique opportunity to be part of high profile international experiment named Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) basined on Einstein’s theory. A site at Hingoli in Marathawada is idendifited as one of the two potential locations for setting up the international laboratory.
Kulkarni encouraged the state to seize the opportunity as it will bring the state on the global map of science and technology.
He urged that institutional collaboration should be initiated between TIFR and the nearby Institute of Science, which is run by the state in Mumbai. The two institutions could partner to chalk out more robust postgraduate teaching and research programmes.
